Yesterday I returned to the House of Wills to do a Cindy Sherman-inspired shoot. I used my beautiful best friend as my model. I borrowed Cindy Sherman’s idea of the portrait portraying stereotypical female roles alongside my undying curiosity and interest in urban and rural abandoned buildings. What fascinates me most about these places is that they were once a home, a community meeting place, places so full of life now sit vacant. I dressed Meghan in her own vintage clothing, most from the eras when the House of Wills was thriving the most. She wanders the house stuck in that time period as if the last 70 years hadn’t taken their toll on the building. I think that they turned out beautiful and haunting.
I hit some major roadblocks with lighting. First I failed to realize you cannot run a generator indoors without killing yourself. Secondly I only got 100 feet of extension cord and this building spans back an entire block. I was only able to use my lights in two spots that I shot. I relied on my flash to help a bit for the rest until it died and I had to rely on the very little natural light that came in some windows that weren’t boarded up.
We both nearly froze to death but it was so much fun.
I am returning in the Spring to re-shoot this and maybe do a new shoot re-creating classic horror movie scenes 1930-1970.
